Modern cynology is undergoing a continuous process of evolution, in which new genetic approaches begin to coexist with traditional breeding models. Within this context, Designer Dogs represent a segment that has already been established in several parts of the world, showing significant technical and market growth over the past decades.
IBC (International Breed Certificate), aware of this global movement, officially implements the Designer Dogs program in Brazil, becoming the first Brazilian institution to structure and regulate this segment based on defined technical criteria, following a model already recognized internationally.
Designer Dogs are based on the application of heterosis (hybrid vigor) through planned crosses between purebred dogs, aiming to combine specific phenotypic, functional, and structural traits. Therefore, this is a breeding model guided by genetic planning, not randomness.
It is essential to establish a clear technical distinction between Designer Dogs and random mixed-breed dogs. While the former result from structured crosses, with careful selection of breeding stock and defined objectives, the latter have uncontrolled ancestry and no genetic direction. This distinction is fundamental for a proper understanding of the segment.
The growth of Designer Dogs worldwide is supported by organizations such as the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC) and is increasingly acknowledged within more traditional systems, such as The Kennel Club (UK). This demonstrates that this model is not an isolated trend, but a consistent evolution within modern dog breeding.
IBC understands that the introduction of this segment in Brazil must occur in an organized, responsible, and technically guided manner, establishing guidelines that include:
- strict breeder selection
- health testing
- structured genetic planning
- clearly defined phenotypic and functional goals
It must be emphasized that crossbreeding alone does not represent genetic progress. Technical advancement depends directly on the criteria applied to the crosses, the quality of the selected dogs, and the control over lineage development.
IBC recognizes that Designer Dogs do not replace traditional cynology, but rather represent a new field within dog breeding that requires proper regulation to prevent distortions and to ensure animal welfare and genetic integrity.
Therefore, the institution assumes the responsibility of acting as an organizing and guiding body for this segment in Brazil, aligning the country with international practices and establishing technical standards for its responsible development.
